Bogged on a Salt Lake in Central Australia

This shot was taken during WSII when Alby and Sam travelled from his farm (at the time, near Coffs Harbour, NSW) to the Kimberley Ranges in Western Australia... a 5000 km trip that would take 3 to 4 weeks. Alby was cruising along a bitumen road when out of the blue it disappeared in front of his eyes. No, his jeep hadn't been beamed up into a space craft, the road had been swept away by erosion. Fortunately he didn't strike it at night.

When you take a keen interest in Alby you'll notice plenty of incidents in which Alby was fortunate. Sometimes he survived dangerous circumstances of no fault of his own, and other times you'll wonder at his sanity when you realise that he deliberately walks into trouble.

But I digress. Alby had to find a way back onto the non-existent road, so he tried to find a way round the creek that was once a road. He spotted some salt lakes, and a flash of left-brain brilliance suggested that he cross them. Needless to say he sank into the crusty bog up to his axles. It took him four days to extricate himself, and this involved a process of salvaging (discarded) railway sleepers from ten kilometres away, one by one, on his motorbike, in order to build a track to reverse upon.
