Machu Picchu - the Village on Top of the World
Machu Picchu is a
well-preserved Inca city in the Urubamba Valley, 112 km from Cuzco
(that helped you place it, didn't it?), built at an altitude of 2,450
metres. That's about the height that 747's fly at, if you're unsure.
The ruins were discovered in 1911.
Alby describes a half
day climb up to Mount Machu Picchu, and some of the most magnificent
views he had ever seen. It is indeed curious that the Spanish never
discovered this lost city, but when the route up to it is described,
you can understand why.
