I used Alta Vista to search for "Alby Mangels". Your site was the only one I found that was really devoted to Alby. The other hits were mainly just mentions of his name in television listings, etc.

I was able to get a partial schedule of when Alby's shows are broadcast on the Travel Channel here in the States. I have been recording them as often as I can. I haven't yet come across any of his World Safari movies, but I'm hoping they'll show them someday. About a month ago the Travel Channel had an "Alby Marathon" where they showed Alby shows for 24 hours in a row, but I didn't know about it in advance to set up tapes. Also, I did watch part of the "Lake Kariba" special, but again I didn't have a chance to tape it.

I'm always happy to hear news about Alby, so if you guys have anything new, drop me an email.

I've just had a look at your Alby site ... I love it.

As an Aussie working in the US I almost felt like I was home again reading about Alby's daring exploits. It is refreshing to see a true Australian icon treated with the respect he deserves.

I think you should seriously consider a similar tribute to the Leylands .... I have particularly fond memories of the time my family missed a Leylands episode because of a reasonably significant blackout in Brisbane. I must have been about 10 at the time and was devastated. Fortunately, so was the rest of the town and the outcry was so huge that the TV station (I forget which) repeated the episode the following evening. Says a lot for Australian cultural standards, doesn't it? (I think the episode was the one were the spinafex gets wrapped around the tail shaft and the venerable old land cruiser goes up in smoke ... nail biting stuff, that ... I can almost hear the theme music now).

BTW, your link to "Judy I" appears to broken (not that I was particularly looking at the pictures of the girls, mind you).

Boys, read this and weep.
I think it is in WS1 where Alby and his nephew are romping down at the Coorong in South Australia.
They did not do all of this on the Camel's back.
They actually had a base camp, an old, stone cottage right on the water front, not far from the very small township of Policeman's Point ( I think).
Now, a mate of mine's father [See mail from Des Mundy, 10th July] owns half of the humpy, the other half is owned by Alby.
Proof of this is that a pair of his famous shorts are permanently hanging from the veranda!
This could be a link to find the whereabouts of the legend, I'll follow it up if you want.

As for lake Kariba and it's similarities to Eildon (big man-made lake about 2 hours from Melbourne)- well it's an artificial lake that's holds a major part of Zim's water supply and it's where all the wealthy and middleclass (white) Zimbabwe folk go houseboating and water skiing etc... (sounds familiar to people who know Eildon) and is about as perilous as a trip to Melbourne Zoo or Werribee Park.

But there's no denying that for entertainment value Alby is an Aussie classic. Though as someone who has been to many of the same places as Alby I hope people don't take his shows too seriously and keep in mind that if Alby is axle-deep in mud you can be sure that there is probably a perfectly good bitumen road just out of camera shot...

Still... I'm looking forward to his next South American film.

Hi,

Saw your page on Alby Mangels. I was wondering if you had found him yet. I had some clues that might help you out. The "Travel Channel", a cable TV channel here in America, is running a series called "Adventure Bound with Alby Mangels". You didn't mention a TV show, on your page so it sounds like it is composed of bits from his films.

It's my favorite show and some of my friends watch it and we will even call each other on the phone during episodes sometimes, to remark on the goings on in the show.

Anyways, at the beginning of the show, Alby comes on and tells us where he's going to go and what's going to happen.

At the end of the shows after he wraps it up he comes and often gives a plug for the the American travel office of the particular country he has just visited in case the viewer wants to go there too. They look like recent film spots judging from his age, and the newness of the show over here. The show is an hour long and runs once per week.

I think this is an arrangement with the Travel Channel, i.e. he is sponsoring travel for different countries. I have heard of a travel company called "Adventure Bound" in Australia that plans safari's and so forth. They advertise here but it has not been mentioned in connection with any of the shows yet to my memory, but it might be a clue.

I didn't understand what you ment about him getting a "bad rap" by the public?? How could anyone not like Alby?! He is so genuine, and sincere, my girlfriend likes him too. Are there some things we haven't been privvy to over here yet? Just curious.

One other question. Has Alby ever gone anywhere up in the Artic? Just curious. If you find him, let me know, I'd like to send him a fan letter in the e-mail.

Without a doubt, your site pays proper homage to a living legend. I can't seem to convince anyone else of that - American viewers to the travelchannel probably have probably noticed that Alby does a quick intro before the show and summary after the show ("If you think you'd like to visit (insert country), grab a pencil,...") He wears his "nice clothes" for these spots; same clothes, every spot. Any idea of the location he is standing while he does these...some kind of overlook or bluff? Hi again Andrew, Thank you for responding to my letter.

I'm pretty sure the endorsements that Alby is giving on the travel channels are paid spots. You might contact the Travel Channel, they might have the number of his agent, or a contact number. The date stamps on the episodes correspond to the copyright date of the film of that trip. There are about 4 different years it seems. 1986 is one, I think 1989 is another, and there is a later one. He is always the same age in the epilogues.

I don't think that Alby faked too much of his show. 99% of the 'stunts' weren't worth the bother in my opinion. I've been on trips around America and I can tell you that things go wrong all the time. Just because he didn't carefully edit them out like all the other safari shows do, shouldn't infer that he created them. A more likely possibility is that he discovered that people liked his fiascos and he played them up a few notches in later movies. That is the impression I got anyways.

I'll check a few places and see if I can come up with any info, but I don't think Alby does much in America, his commercial spots were probably filmed abroad and sent over. Most of our remote wilderness areas aren't much of a challenge compared to his trips. I think Alaska and the Yukon might be an interesting challenge for Alby though.

I'd love to see some of those parodies. :-)

Regarding your mission to locate the elusive Alby, I suspect the sooner you start selling merchandise, the sooner he will go on safari looking for you.

I just returned from Oz less than two weeks ago. I've watched Alby on our Travel Channel in America for the last 6-8 months now. What's really strange is that I wondered what the odds would be of me actually running into Alby while I was over there. WELL! Guess what! On my flight from Adelaide to Sydney, who do you think was right beside me across the aisle!!?? YES! Alby!! I got his autograph and the guy next to him took our picture with my camera. (Still don't have the film back from the developer yet) I'll email you a scan when I get it, if you want. Anyway I chatted with him for a little while. He was on his way to Africa once again. Said Rick was already there. I asked him about Beau and Matilida and he told me they were currently on a trip through the desert. When we landed in Sydney he even offered to help carry my luggage, but I politely declined (am I dumb or what!). This could have been the beginning of a great friendship. Oh well.

Wow I hoped Id find something like this, What an interesting guy Alby seems to be. I Watch his "show" Adventure Bound on the Travel channel every othet night starting on Monday morning at 4am. I work the graveyard shift and the TV is always on. I quicky learned that the show is both entertaining and insperational. Sightings: Ive do some traveling in North America and unfortunetly haven't seen him. (But why would he be in borring old North America when he hangs out near all the cool southern Pacific stuff) As for the "curse", if you travel alot you quickly learn that not all things on trips go as planned, but for most people there isn't a camera running on you most of the time. I mean this guy was on the trail for something like 20 years.. so of course he's gonna have a few jeep crashes, rotor-craft mishaps and confrontations with the suspect law enforcement officials of third world countries, it just goes with the territory.... so to speak. Hey if you guys ever decide to go on another Alby search let me know, I won't get borred after the second half hour of the video [next time Roland can stay at home, you're on!] and plus it sounds like a semi-valid excuse for me to see Australia. I believe that in your "danger" section you forgot to ad one thing. I was watching "Adventure Bound" on the Travel channel the other day and Alby and Michele, I believe were traveling the skeleton coast in Africa via camel. They had 5 camels 4 adults and one baby. ( I do not know if any of the older ones were Beau and Matilda). One night before that section of the trip lions started to follow them and the little camel kept wandering off. Well, when Alby woke up he could not find the baby camel, he walked up over a small ridge and seen the lions finishing up a snack of his baby camel. Michele seemed very broken up as well as Alby. I think I also seen Alby crying when he told the owner of the camel what happened.

During the late sixties I was working for an adventure magazine in Sweden and among many different missions I sailed in a yacht from Sweden to the Caribbean. The name of the yacht was "Klaraborg". In a documentary I saw in a TV-channel made by "Alby ", the speaker said that "Alby" almost started his life as an adveturer at Klaraborg. I remeber when I was working for "Woman Day" (!) as a photographer in Melbourne in the beginning of the seventies; when sitting on a train from Sydney to Melbourne, I read in the newspaper that Klaraborg just had arrived Sydney. Klaraborg sunk during a hurricane outside Australia a few years later. I am working on a script for a documentary about "Klaraborg" and her destiny. For that purpose I need to get in contact with Ably. I would like to ask you if you have a clue how to get in toutch with him.

Thank you for your rapid reply on my mail. I have sent a mail to the National Film and sound Archive concerning the "World Safari I" you mentioned in your reply. Unfortnunally they didn´t have that video on their list any more, but they forwarded my message to a company in Melbourne, that gave me en short note last night thet thay will get it for me.

As I told you last, I was involved when Klaraborg was rebilt from a pile of boards to a proud ship. I got involved at the end of many years of reconstruction, when the project "Seven Seas" were dried out of money. I sold the idea to a publishing company, who for a small sum of money bought the option of the trip from Gothenburg, Sweden to the Canary Island. Together with one of the crew members we also succeeded to get some money for a docu of the trip. Unfortunally the photographer got drowned outside Portugal. Anyhow, we came to the Canaries at christmas 1968. I wrote my articles and then I left the beautiful ship. But I got another misson from my publisher; I had to cross the Atlantic in a rotten piece of wood, they called a sailing yacht. After three weeks crisscrossing the Atlantic (non was able to navigate) in heavy weather we finally were found by the US Coast Guard and the ship was toed in to Antigua as a limb duck. After a short time in Antigua I went to Dominica were many Swedes lived at the time. There I met the crew from Klaraborg again. Thay had just started to make tours with tourists. After a year in Dominica (a year that is described in my last documentary) I returned to Sweden and made some interviews whith parents and other relatives to the "boys" at Klaraborg for the purpose to in the future make a documentary. (It was said that Klaraborg and the crew would return to Sweden after some years in the Caribbean.) Early 1970 I went to Australia, partly for writing for Swedish papers and magazines, but also to work as photographer at Womens Day in Melbourne. I started my visit in Australia by stopping in Sydney to write some articles and do some other jobs. The very same day I left Sydney for Melbourne the Klaraborg arrived Sydney. I read it in the morning paper when sitting on the train. I tried desperately to get in contact with my friends onboard - unsuccessfully. I returned to Sweden after about a year and a half in Australia. During the years I have got small framgments of information about what happened to Klaraborg and her destiny. I got very surprised when I saw "Alby´s" documentary where the speaker stated that Alby was on Klarraborg. I really hope that I got a copy of that video. I have just started the preparation och is doing the research about Klaraborg and her history. As I rememer from my notes, the last of the original crew member were Ove Linnér and Ingemar Janum, I suppose. They were probably onboard when the lady sunk outside WA during the 80s. I´m sure that Alby or/and somebody else is able to help me with some information. OK "Shortbread" time in Sweden is now twenty to two in the night and I suppose you have just have get out of bed for a new exciting day. It would be nice if you can forward my letter to people that can inform Alby about my intentions. I suppose he is very busy, especially if he is doing the editing - I know. Time to go to bed. We found your web site last summer. It is very well done and we have enjoyed it.

My 11 year old daughter first showed us the funny Alby Mangles on the travel channel last summer. It airs here in San Diego very late at night. We are all wondering just how old Alby is now and how recent these shows are. The last one was somewhere in the Caribbean with Alby and an older Rick on a sailboat. Alby's latest babe was a dark, island native girl (We were surprised to see him deviate from his usual preference for fair hair). There was some sort of business on deck with a homemade beer, everyone hated it but the dogs lapped it up.

We are interested in knowing if Alby is still alive or have his old ghosts caught up to him and successfully tipped his trailer off of a cliff? With the amount of females he takes up with, we would not be surprised if eventually a fatal attraction takes him down.

Our entire family continues to watch Alby on the Travel Channel. Thank you for sharing the fun with us!

I was just sent the pages of your website of the Australian Legend ALBY by a friend in Sydney. I live in California, USA. I first saw Adventure Bound on the Travel Channel when I lived in New York City!

You left out some classic Mangels quotes. When Alby was in Machu Pichu with Michelle and he says,"I usually don't try to get too close to the girls, but there was something special about her. I didn't mind getting close to Michelle, she fit into my lifestyle just fine!" Is that a classic Mangels quote or what!

I travel a fair bit, and I always ask the Australian females about Alby and not many seem to care for his womanizing ways. You get that. My friend from Sydney acquired some vintage Alby photos since she works for one of Murdoch's newspapers. There is one of him & Sam on the Gretta, him & Michelle on a camel, him & Judy Green on a beach, & one of Alby's friends auctioning off Alby memorabilia, including a pair of Alby's trademark speedos! MY friend tried to track Alby down & nobody knew his whereabouts. His shows are entertaining & funny. He's funny when he's not trying to be. People either get it or they don't. You could start Alby Hysteria all over Australia to a new generation! Enjoyed the web pages.

Dear Rob & Shortbread, I must say..."Great job on the web site." I will admit that not many people are knowledgable enough to know the legend that is Alby Mangels. Personally, he is my hero. I, myself, love to travel and I have admired his talents and energy from his show Adventure Bound on the Travel Channel. And in the spirit of his mere existance...my friends and I have planned our own little meager adventure that we humblely call "the Alby Mangel's Week". We (4 guys from NC, USA) plan to journey to the Outer Banks of NC (I know...not very far) but we are bringing only 50 dollars each and one shirt, one pair of shorts, etc. And of course we will bring a camera. We are packing extremely light and taking only what we need to survive. It will be a blast. It is the cheap way to follow in Alby's tremendous footsteps. What do you think, ehh?
